Many people enter the nursing world because of the many benefits that they can acquire. Alongside these benefits are a number of responsibilities that a staff nurse is designed to accomplish. There are different responsibilities for the different type of nurses. A nurse can be a registered general nurse, RGN, or a registered mental nurse, RMN. An RGN is a nurse who doesn’t perform a specific kind of job unlike the RMN who stays and tends people afflicted with mental illnesses. As much as possible, RGN’s should be able to expose themselves in the different areas of nursing so that they are able to do their work better. Nurses are also able to work in different kinds of settings like in hospitals, community health centers, clinics, in the home of the patient and many others. In the hospital, they can also be found in different departments including the Intensive Care units, out-patient unit or the in-patient unit. In general, nurses have different responsibilities based on the areas they are in.
Here is an enumeration of the different assigned tasks of a staff nurse.
The main responsibility of a staff nurse is to give care to the patients. They are accountable for the improvement of the patient’s health in their care. They should be able to keep a track of the patient’s progress and to do that they should perform regular check-ups of the patient and monitoring of the patient’s condition and statistics. Aside from this, they must know the medical history of the patients thoroughly. After the nurse has performed a check-up and condition, he is responsible for giving the data to the right people.
Nurses also follow a strict schedule because the treatment or giving of medicine to the patients is given to a certain time of the day to take effect. It is also their job to understand the treatment that they are giving to the patients. This is because they are also the ones who are able to talk to the relatives of the patient about what they are giving as treatment. And in addition, it is better to work and apply the theory if you understand it well.
Even though staff nurses have different tasks individually, they are classified into group or teams. A team of staff nurses is headed by a Senior Staff Nurse. The group is responsible for the preparation and execution of the different policies for nursing care that will benefit the patients. The team is also in charge of evaluating the different policies that they implement and the performance of each staff nurse. It is their responsibility to modify these policies if it is for the benefit of the patients under their care.
Aside from the tasks stated above, nurses also perform administrative roles such as reports, paperwork and others.
These are just the general responsibilities of a staff nurse. These tasks maybe quite many but then, the benefits that a staff nurse receives is worth the hard work. So still, many people engage in nursing, be it as a general nurse or a nurse in a certain kind of field.
